If you're planning an adventure elopement and can’t imagine saying "I do" without your furry best friend by your side—you’re not alone! Our pets are part of the family, and for many couples, including them in their elopement day feels like the most natural thing in the world.

Whether you're exchanging vows on a mountain summit, at a quiet forest trail, or along a rugged coastline, there are so many beautiful (and practical) ways to include your pet in your elopement. Here's everything you need to know to make it happen.

Why Include Your Pet in Your Elopement?

Your pet has likely been there through big milestones and quiet moments alike, and having them there for one of the most meaningful days of your life just makes sense. Including them in your elopement adds emotion, authenticity, and joy to your day—plus, those photos will be unforgettable.

Things to Consider Before Bringing Your Pet

🐾 Pet-Friendly Locations

Before locking in a location, double-check the park or venue’s pet policy. Many national and state parks have rules about where dogs are and aren’t allowed. Some trails or lookout points may be off-limits, while others welcome leashed pets. If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help research or suggest dog-friendly elopement spots!

🐾 Your Pet’s Personality

Adventure elopements often involve travel, new environments, and lots of stimulation. Think about how your pet handles those situations. Are they comfortable hiking? How do they do around small groups of people or in unfamiliar settings? Even if they’re not part of the whole day, you might include them for a short portion—like your getting ready moments or a few portraits.

🐾 Travel & Safety

Make sure to plan for food, water, and rest for your pet, especially if you'll be out all day. Bring a leash, harness, poop bags, and a few comfort items to keep them relaxed. For warm or cold climates, consider temperature-appropriate gear to keep them safe and comfy.

Photographer Tip: Bring Squeaky Toys and Treats!

One of the best ways to make sure your pet looks their absolute best in photos? Come prepared with a few of their favorite attention-getters.

Bringing a squeaky toy, treats, or even a familiar sound (like a clicker or crinkle toy) can help your photographer capture those sweet, alert expressions. I always recommend bringing a few small, easy-to-carry treats that your pet loves—it works wonders for getting them to sit still or look right at the camera when needed.

It’s also a great idea to let me know ahead of time what your pet responds to best. That way, I can be ready with the right cues to grab their attention in the most natural way, without stressing them out or disrupting the moment.

Whether it's a head tilt, tongue-out grin, or tail-wagging excitement—those little things are what make your photos come to life!

Ways to Include Your Pet in Your Elopement

1. Spend the Morning Together

Start your special day with your pet by your side. Whether it's a peaceful walk, some playtime, or simply sharing a quiet moment, including your furry friend in the morning festivities sets a heartfelt tone for the day.

2. Dress Them Up (Comfortably!)

A floral collar, bandana, or bow tie can make your pet look wedding-ready without compromising their comfort. Just avoid anything restrictive or heavy.

3. Plan a Fun Activity

Incorporate a favorite activity with your pet into your elopement day. Whether it's a hike, a swim, or a game of fetch, these moments can be both meaningful and photogenic.

4. Include Them in the Ceremony

Let them be your ring bearer, sit with you during your vows, or have a symbolic moment where you include them. Even just their calm presence adds to the meaning of the day.

5. Have a Pet-Sitter on Standby

If your pet is only part of the day for a short time, consider hiring a local pet-sitter to help with transitions. That way, you can enjoy your celebration without worrying.

6. Capture the Memories

As your photographer, I’ll make sure to include plenty of adorable, heartfelt, and fun moments with your pet throughout the day—whether it’s playful candids, quiet snuggles, or a family portrait.

Eloping with Your Pet at San Francisco City Hall: What You Need to Know

San Francisco City Hall is a stunning and iconic location for elopements, and many couples wish to include their furry companions in their special day. While the official policy is that only service animals are permitted inside the building, in practice, well-behaved dogs are often allowed, especially if they are leashed and accompanied by a dedicated handler.

Tips for Including Your Pet:

  • Communicate in Advance: Inform your photographer and any other vendors about your plans to include your pet. They can provide valuable advice and help coordinate logistics.

  • Designate a Handler: Assign a trusted friend, family member, or professional pet handler to be responsible for your pet throughout the day. This ensures your pet's needs are met and allows you to focus on your ceremony.

  • Be Prepared: Bring essentials such as a leash, water, treats, and waste bags. Having a favorite toy or squeaky item can help capture your pet's attention during photos.

  • Plan for Photos: Even if your pet cannot be present for the entire ceremony, consider including them in pre-ceremony preparations or post-ceremony portraits outside the building.

  • Respect the Venue: Always keep your pet leashed and under control. Be mindful of other visitors and the historic nature of the venue.

Including your pet in your City Hall elopement requires some additional planning, but with the right preparation, it can add a heartfelt and memorable touch to your special day.

Can Your Pet Be Your Witness? In Some States, Yes!

Believe it or not, in a few places, your pet can legally be your wedding witness—paw print and all!

Some states and counties are more relaxed about who (or what!) can sign a marriage license. While a human officiant and legally authorized witness are often required, in a symbolic or secondary spot on the license, couples have occasionally added their pet’s paw print as a fun, personal touch. For example:

  • Colorado and California (in self-solemnizing or private ceremonies) have had couples use a paw print as a second or symbolic witness signature.

  • Other states may allow flexibility for you to include your pet’s paw on a commemorative version of your marriage certificate or keepsake document—even if it’s not legally binding.

Always check with your specific county clerk’s office ahead of time to confirm what’s allowed. Even if your pet can’t legally sign, there are still creative and meaningful ways to make them part of the moment—like having a paw print added to your vow books, ceremony decor, or wedding announcements.

Because what could be more memorable than saying, “Our dog was our witness”?

Tips for a Smooth Experience

  • Do a trial run. Visit a similar location with your pet ahead of time to see how they respond.

  • Pack a pet-specific bag. Treats, water, bowls, wipes, extra leash—don’t forget the essentials!

  • Check lodging in advance. If you're staying overnight, make sure your accommodation is pet-friendly.

  • Bring a friend. If you're not hiring a pet-sitter, bring someone your pet loves who can help during parts of the day.

Real Talk: Your Day, Your Way

Remember, this is your day—and it should reflect what matters most to you. If your dog, cat, or other furry friend plays a big role in your life, there’s no reason they can’t be a part of your elopement too. Whether they’re hiking alongside you, snuggling during golden hour, or just there for a quiet moment—you’ll never regret having them be part of the story.
