Eloping Under the Stars: Why Moab’s Dark Skies Are Magical

When people think of Moab, they picture red rock arches, dusty desert trails, and fiery sunsets lighting up the cliffs. But what most people don’t realize is that once the sun dips below the horizon, Moab transforms into something even more magical, one of the best places in the entire country to see the stars!

If you’ve ever dreamed of saying your vows under the Milky Way or ending your wedding night stargazing with your partner, Moab is one of the most incredible places you could choose for your elopement.

Why Moab’s Skies Are So Special

Moab is known for its dramatic landscapes, but its dark skies are what make it truly unforgettable. Because it’s far from city lights, the area has some of the lowest light pollution in the U.S. That means you can see the night sky in a way most people never get to - bright, endless, and full of constellations.

Both Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park are officially designated International Dark Sky Parks, which means the stargazing is unreal. Whether you’re standing on a cliff overlooking the canyons or sitting by a campfire with your love, the view above is pure magic.

A Perfect Ending to Your Elopement Day

I always tell my couples that eloping in Moab is all about experiencing the landscape, not just seeing it. Many couples plan their ceremony for golden hour, then stay after sunset for starlit photos. There’s something so peaceful about slowing down after a day of exploring and watching the sky shift from pink and orange to deep indigo and finally into a blanket of stars.

How to Plan a Moab Stargazing Elopement

Planning an elopement that includes night photos takes a little extra care, but it’s so worth it. Here are a few quick tips to make it perfect:

  • Pick the right time of year. Spring and fall are best for comfortable weather and clear skies.

  • Avoid full moons. A new moon or a sliver moon gives you the darkest skies for stargazing.

  • Bring layers. The desert gets cold after dark, even in summer.

  • Plan your timeline around the light. I love starting with golden hour portraits, then moving into blue hour and night photos under the stars. Or starting extra early before sunrise and then staying for that perfect light as the sun comes up/
