Best Sunrise Elopement Locations in Yosemite National Park

There is something truly magical about Yosemite at sunrise. The valley is quiet, the light slowly spills across the granite cliffs, and for a little while it feels like you have one of the most beautiful places on earth almost entirely to yourselves.

For couples planning an elopement, sunrise is often the best time of day for photos in Yosemite. The light is soft and glowing, the temperatures are cooler, and the crowds are far smaller than later in the day.

Over the years I have photographed many elopements throughout Yosemite in every season, and sunrise is consistently one of the most incredible experiences couples can have here. If you are dreaming of exchanging vows as the first light hits the mountains, here are some of the best sunrise elopement locations in Yosemite National Park.

Elopement in Yosemite National Park

Glacier Point

Glacier Point is one of the most iconic viewpoints in Yosemite and sunrise here is absolutely breathtaking. From this overlook you get a sweeping view of Half Dome, Yosemite Valley, and the surrounding peaks as the sun rises over the Sierra Nevada.

The first light often hits Half Dome first, turning the granite a glowing golden color while the valley below slowly fills with light.

For elopements, Glacier Point offers:

• one of the most dramatic views in the park
• incredible sunrise light on Half Dome
• multiple spots nearby for portraits

Because it is such a famous viewpoint, sunrise is the best time to experience it with fewer people around.

Important note: Glacier Point Road typically closes in winter due to snow, so this location is usually accessible from late spring through fall depending on snowfall.

Cathedral Beach

Cathedral Beach is one of the most peaceful sunrise locations in Yosemite Valley. This quiet riverside area offers stunning views of El Capitan reflected in the Merced River and often has beautiful morning mist rising from the water.

At sunrise the valley feels incredibly calm here, with soft light filtering through the trees and illuminating the cliffs.

Couples love Cathedral Beach because it offers:

• beautiful reflections of El Capitan
• a quiet and intimate ceremony spot
• gorgeous golden light filtering through the valley

It is also an easy access location, making it perfect for couples who want a stunning Yosemite backdrop without a long hike.

Sentinel Bridge

Sentinel Bridge is famous for one of the most photographed views in Yosemite Valley. From the bridge you can see Half Dome perfectly framed at the end of the Merced River, often with beautiful reflections in the water.

At sunrise the scene becomes especially magical as the first light touches Half Dome and slowly spreads across the valley.

Why couples love Sentinel Bridge:

• one of the most iconic Yosemite views
• stunning reflections in the river
• easy access for ceremonies and portraits

It is a great option for couples who want classic Yosemite scenery in their elopement photos.

Taft Point

If you are dreaming of a dramatic cliffside elopement, Taft Point is one of the most epic locations in Yosemite.

Perched high above Yosemite Valley, Taft Point offers incredible views of El Capitan and the surrounding mountains. The sunrise light slowly fills the valley below, creating an incredibly dramatic scene.

The hike to Taft Point is about 2.2 miles round trip, which makes it perfect for couples who want a little adventure on their elopement day.

Taft Point is amazing for:

• adventurous couples who love hiking
• epic cliffside views
• dramatic sunrise light over Yosemite Valley

Because of its incredible views, Taft Point has become one of the most sought after elopement locations in Yosemite.

Tunnel View

Tunnel View is one of the most famous viewpoints in all of Yosemite and it is easy to see why. From this overlook you can see El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome all in one sweeping view of Yosemite Valley.

At sunrise the light slowly pours into the valley, creating beautiful layers of color and shadow across the cliffs.

Tunnel View is a great sunrise elopement location because:

• it offers one of the most iconic Yosemite landscapes
• it is easy to access
• sunrise tends to be quieter than midday

It is an amazing place for couples who want a truly classic Yosemite backdrop.

Why Sunrise is Perfect for Yosemite Elopements

Sunrise is one of the best times of day to elope in Yosemite for several reasons.

First, the light is incredibly soft and flattering for photos. The golden morning glow on the granite cliffs creates some of the most beautiful lighting conditions you will find in the park.

Second, Yosemite is one of the most visited national parks in the United States. Starting your elopement day at sunrise allows you to experience some of these locations with far fewer crowds.

And finally, sunrise elopements create a slower, more peaceful experience. Many couples love beginning their day with a quiet ceremony and then spending the rest of the day exploring the park together.

Planning Your Yosemite Sunrise Elopement

If you are considering a sunrise elopement in Yosemite, there are a few important things to keep in mind.

• Plan to start hiking or traveling to your location well before sunrise
• Bring warm layers since mornings can be cold in the mountains
• Check seasonal road closures in advance
• Apply for your Yosemite wedding permit early

One thing many couples worry about with sunrise elopements is getting ready so early in the morning. The good news is that I work with several incredible hair and makeup artists who are used to early starts and will come directly to your Airbnb or hotel to get you ready before sunrise. That way you can wake up, relax, get pampered, and still be ready for your photos looking and feeling amazing as the sun comes up over the valley.

Another great option for sunrise elopements is splitting your photography coverage across the day. Many couples choose to start their day with a sunrise ceremony or portraits when the light is soft and the park is quiet. After a few hours of exploring and photos, you can take a break in the middle of the day to relax, grab lunch, or freshen up.

Then we meet back up later for sunset at another incredible location in the park. This allows you to experience two completely different landscapes and lighting conditions while also keeping your day relaxed and enjoyable instead of rushing from one place to another.

Splitting the day like this often creates a really beautiful rhythm for your elopement and gives you time to actually enjoy the experience of being in Yosemite together.

Working with a photographer who knows Yosemite well can also make a huge difference. Knowing where the best light hits at sunrise and sunset, how to navigate the park early in the morning, and helping you plan locations and timelines can make your day feel effortless and truly unforgettable.

Dreaming of a Yosemite Sunrise Elopement

Yosemite is one of the most incredible places in the world to get married, and sunrise is when the park feels the most magical. Whether you are exchanging vows on a quiet riverbank, standing on a dramatic cliffside, or watching the sun rise over Half Dome, it is an experience you will never forget.

If you are dreaming about eloping in Yosemite, I would love to help you plan an unforgettable day. From helping you choose the perfect sunrise location to creating a timeline, recommending incredible vendors, and finding beautiful photo spots throughout the park, I help my couples design elopement days that feel adventurous, meaningful, and completely unique to them.
