Liana and Dino’s Dreamy Big Sur Elopement

Some days feel like they are straight out of a dream, and Liana and Dino’s Big Sur elopement was one of those days. They wanted to experience as much of Big Sur as possible and really soak in the different landscapes this beautiful coastline has to offer. From glowing redwood forests to fog wrapped cliffs and finally a peaceful night under the stars, their day was full of meaning, intention, and so much love.

Forest

We started the day tucked deep inside the redwood forest. The light filtered down through the towering trees, wrapping Liana and Dino in a soft golden glow as they explored the quiet trails together. It was just the two of them surrounded by the calm and beauty of the forest. They walked hand in hand, laughed, paused to breathe it all in, and really settled into the moment. There is something so grounding about starting your elopement day in the stillness of the redwoods, and this morning was no exception.

Ceremony

From the warmth of the forest we drove out toward Garrapata for their ceremony. In true Big Sur fashion, the weather completely shifted as we reached the coastline. While the forest had been sunny and bright, the coast was wrapped in thick, moody fog. It was such a perfect reminder that the weather along Big Sur is always unpredictable, but always beautiful in its own way.

We met up with a handful of their closest friends who had traveled to be there for their big day. Together, we walked out to the cliffs where Liana and Dino stood surrounded by fog, ocean air, and the people who love them most. They shared their vows on the cliffside, the world soft and quiet around them, and it felt incredibly intimate and emotional. It was the kind of ceremony that makes you forget everything else exists for a moment.

Cliffside Photos

After the ceremony we explored the cliffs together. Even with the fog moving in and out, the coastline looked absolutely stunning. The muted colors, crashing waves far below, and soft light created the most dreamy atmosphere. Liana and Dino wandered along the paths, wrapped up in each other and the beauty of Big Sur. We captured so many sweet, candid moments of them just being themselves, soaking in the day, and celebrating the fact that they had just promised forever to one another.

Night Photos

We ended the day with some amazing night photos. There is something so special about slowing down at the end of an elopement day and taking a few final portraits in the dark. The world feels quieter and more intimate, and it becomes all about the two of them. Under the night sky, with the last light fading away, we created some really magical images to close out their day.

Liana and Dino’s Big Sur elopement was such a beautiful blend of adventure, romance, and intention. From glowing forest light to fog filled cliffs and peaceful night skies, every part of their day felt meaningful and completely them. It was such an honor to document it all.

Kind Words From the Bride

“Julia was incredible to work with from beginning to end. We chose to have an elopement-style wedding with a small, intimate ceremony surrounded by close friends, and we knew we wanted to get married among the redwood trees with sweeping coastal views. That vision led us to Big Sur, and Julia could not have been a better photographer for the experience.

She knew all the best locations for breathtaking photos and guided us to the perfect spot for a quick, meaningful ceremony. Her knowledge of the area and eye for capturing natural, authentic moments made us feel completely at ease.

One of our favorite touches was the Polaroids she gave us at the end of the shoot — such a thoughtful and special surprise. Getting that instant glimpse of our day, followed by sneak peeks just a couple of days later, was truly a treat.

We couldn’t be happier with our experience and would absolutely love to work with Julia again, especially for future anniversary milestones in new locations. We can’t recommend her enough!” -Liana

How to Plan Your Own Big Sur Elopement

If you are dreaming of your own Big Sur elopement, you are absolutely not alone! So many couples have chosen to have an elopement over a wedding. This stretch of California coastline is one of the most breathtaking places to say your vows. Between the redwoods, dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, and ever changing fog, no two days ever look the same. Here are a few tips to help you start planning your own Big Sur elopement day:

Choose the Right Time of Year

Big Sur weather has a mind of its own, but certain seasons tend to be more predictable. Spring and fall often bring beautiful temperatures with fewer crowds. Summer can be gorgeous but foggy along the coast. Winter can be moody, romantic, and quiet. The best part is that Big Sur is beautiful in every season — it is all about choosing the vibe that feels right for you.

Plan Your Locations

One of the best parts of eloping in Big Sur is the ability to explore multiple locations in one day, just like Liana and Dino did. You can wander through the redwoods, explore the cliffs, visit a beach, or find a quiet overlook to share your vows. Some areas require permits depending on your ceremony plans or group size, so working with a photographer who knows the area can help make things stress free. Be Flexible With Weather

Fog, wind, sunshine, and dramatic clouds are all part of the Big Sur experience. The weather can shift from bright sun to heavy fog within minutes, especially near Garrapata and the coastal cliffs. Instead of fighting it, embrace it. Foggy photos are incredibly romantic and cinematic, while sunny days feel bright, joyful, and warm. There is no wrong version of Big Sur.

Consider Bringing a Few Guests

Whether it is just the two of you or you bring a handful of your closest people, Big Sur is perfect for intimate celebrations. If you are having guests, make sure everyone is prepared for walking on uneven trails, changing weather, and rocky scenery. Comfortable shoes are always a must! Choosing to elope definitely doesn’t mean you have to run away and not invite anyone! In fact, many of my couples choose to have both a wedding AND elopement!
