Engagement Photos at Filoli Gardens in Woodside, CA: A Complete Guide
If you are dreaming of engagement photos that feel timeless, romantic, and naturally beautiful, Filoli Gardens in Woodside might just be your place. Filoli is one of my favorite locations in the Bay Area for engagement sessions thanks to its sweeping gardens, elegant architecture, and endless variety of photo backdrops.
Whether you are envisioning something soft and romantic, editorial and elegant, or relaxed and natural, Filoli offers it all in one stunning location.
In this guide, I am sharing everything you need to know about planning your engagement photos at Filoli, including the best seasons, what blooms throughout the year, opening hours, how to book your visit, best days to go, and what to wear.
Why Filoli Is Such a Special Place for Engagement Photos
Filoli is not just a garden. It is a historic estate with beautifully maintained formal gardens, hidden walkways, quiet courtyards, fountains, and tree lined paths. Every corner feels intentional and thoughtfully designed, which means we can capture a wide variety of looks in one session without needing to travel between locations.
One of the biggest perks of Filoli is how much variety you get in a single shoot. We can move from romantic rose gardens to peaceful shaded paths, to open lawns with grand architectural backdrops, all within walking distance!
It is truly one of those places where every turn offers something beautiful.
Seasonal Blooms at Filoli Gardens
Filoli changes throughout the year, which means your engagement photos will have a different feel depending on the season you choose.
Spring March through May
Spring is hands down my favorite time to photograph at Filoli!
You will see tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths filling the formal gardens
Cherry blossoms and flowering shrubs soften the entire property
Everything feels fresh, colorful, and lush
If you love florals and vibrant gardens, spring is peak season here.
Summer June through August
Summer brings bold colors and full greenery.
Roses are in full bloom in June and July
Lawns and hedges are rich and vibrant
The gardens feel full and dramatic
Summer light can be a bit stronger, so timing your session closer to the end of the day or right when they open is ideal.
Fall September through November
Fall offers a warmer and slightly moodier feel.
Ornamental grasses and late blooming flowers add texture
Some leaves begin turning soft autumn tones
Light becomes gentler and the gardens feel calmer
This season is beautiful if you love earthy tones and softer light.
Winter December through February
Winter is quieter but still incredibly elegant.
Evergreen hedges and garden structure really shine
Pathways and architecture take center stage
It often feels peaceful and uncrowded
Even without heavy blooms, Filoli still feels timeless and romantic.
Filoli Opening Hours and Best Timing for Photos
Filoli is typically open from 10am-5pm, with last entry around 3pm.
Because of this, I usually recommend scheduling your engagement session before daylight savings time if possible. That allows us to get closer to golden hour and enjoy softer light during your shoot.
After the time change, the light is still beautiful, but it can be a bit harsher since we cannot stay late inside the gardens. However, don’t fret! We can still get beautiful images year round at this amazing location!
Weekdays vs Weekends at Filoli
If you take only one piece of advice from this guide, let it be this.
Weekdays are so much better than weekends!
Filoli becomes extremely busy on weekends, especially during spring and early summer. This often means:
More people in the background
Longer waits at popular garden spots
Less flexibility to move freely
Weekday sessions feel calmer, more private, and more relaxed. That energy really shows in your photos. If your schedule allows, I highly recommend booking a weekday evening session.
How to Book Your Filoli Reservation
Filoli requires reservations for all visitors, including engagement sessions.
Here is how to book:
Visit filoli.org
Choose your preferred date and time
Select a standard garden admission ticket
Complete your reservation
Dates can sell out, especially on weekends and during peak bloom seasons, so I always recommend booking as soon as your photo date is confirmed.
What to Wear for Your Filoli Engagement Photos
Filoli is elegant and romantic, so your outfits can really elevate the overall feel of your gallery. The goal is to complement the gardens without competing with them.
Here are my favorite tips for Filoli sessions:
Stick to Soft Timeless Colors
Neutral and earthy tones photograph beautifully here. Think creams, tans, soft browns, sage, dusty blues, muted florals, and warm grays.
If you love color, go for softer shades instead of bold or neon tones.
Avoid Busy Patterns and Logos
Simple outfits always photograph better. Solid colors and subtle textures keep the focus on you and help your images feel timeless.
Think About Movement
Flowy dresses, skirts, and layers photograph beautifully in Filoli’s walkways and gardens. Movement adds so much life to your images.
Coordinate Instead of Matching
You do not need identical outfits. Choose colors that work well together. For example, one person in lighter neutrals and the other in warmer tones creates balance without looking overly styled.
Dress for the Season
Spring and summer work well with lighter fabrics and softer tones. Fall and winter are perfect for cozy layers, sweaters, jackets, and deeper neutrals.
Even in warmer months, bringing a light jacket or wrap is always a good idea.
Comfortable Shoes Matter
Filoli is large and we will likely walk between different areas. Bring comfortable shoes or a backup pair if your outfit includes heels.
And always feel free to send me photos of what you are considering. I am happy to help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully here.

Filoli Gardens is one of the Bay Area’s most magical engagement photo locations for a reason. Between the seasonal blooms, elegant architecture, and peaceful garden paths, it offers a perfect mix of romantic and natural.
