A Guide to Eloping in Brookings, Oregon and Jedediah Smith Redwoods
If you are dreaming of an elopement that feels wild, peaceful, romantic, and deeply intentional, Brookings Oregon and the nearby redwoods in Northern California might just be one of the most underrated places in the country.
This stretch of coastline where Oregon meets California is unreal. Think dramatic cliffs, quiet hidden beaches, misty forests, giant redwoods, and that moody Pacific Northwest energy that makes everything feel cinematic. It is one of my favorite areas to photograph because you can experience so many completely different landscapes in such a short distance.
You can start your morning on the beach, say your vows overlooking the ocean, and end your day wandering through ancient redwood forests. It is magic.
Why Elope in Brookings and Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park
Brookings gives you that rugged coastal beauty with sweeping ocean views and quiet beaches, while Jedediah Smith offers towering redwoods that feel straight out of a fairytale. Together they create one of the most diverse and stunning elopement backdrops you could ask for.
What I love most about this area is how peaceful it feels. Even during busier seasons, it is easy to find pockets of quiet where it feels like the world disappears and it is just the two of you.
It is perfect for couples who want something adventurous but also intimate. No crowds. No pressure. Just space to slow down and really be present with each other.
Best Time of Year to Elope Here
Late spring through early fall is generally the most popular window, with May through September offering the most consistent weather. Summer brings warmer temperatures and clearer skies, while spring gives you lush greenery and fewer crowds.
That said, coastal weather can be unpredictable year round and fog is very common. Honestly, the fog is part of what makes this area so special. If you love moody vibes, dramatic skies, and quiet beaches, fall and early spring can be absolutely stunning too.
Getting There
Most couples fly into Medford or Crescent City and rent a car. From either airport it is about a two hour drive to Brookings with plenty of scenic stops along the way.
Once you arrive, having a car is essential so you can move easily between beaches and redwood locations.
One of My Favorite Ceremony Venues: Capella by the Sea Chapel
If you love the idea of having a simple ceremony space with ocean views, Capella by the Sea is such a beautiful option.
This little coastal chapel sits right above the water and feels incredibly calm and intentional. It is perfect for couples who want a meaningful ceremony spot without anything feeling overdone. The light inside is soft and dreamy, and stepping outside afterward puts you straight into coastal scenery for portraits.
I love pairing Capella by the Sea with nearby beaches or a drive into the redwoods afterward. It gives your day a beautiful flow from ceremony to adventure.
Where to Stay
I always recommend cozy Airbnbs along the coast or cabins near the redwoods. If possible, choose accommodations with lots of natural light and neutral interiors. These make getting ready photos feel bright, calm, and timeless.
Bonus points if your place has ocean views or forest surroundings so you can start your day already immersed in nature.
Brookings also has a handful of charming inns and small hotels if you prefer something simple and central.

🗺️ Where to Base Depending on Your Vibe
🌊 Ocean-Focused Elopement
Base yourself in Brookings or Crescent City so you’re steps from favorite beaches and coastal cliffs.
🌲 Forest & Adventure Focused
Stay in or near the redwoods so morning light and forest walks are right outside your door.
🌅 Mixed Experience (Coast + Forest)
Split your stay — one night near the coast and one night in the redwoods. This makes your two-day adventure feel even more intentional and cinematic.
Tips for Booking
Reserve early — especially for oceanfront rooms and forest cabins during spring through fall.
Look for parking & access — some rentals have better proximity to specific trailheads or beaches than others.
Consider natural light for photos — accommodations with big windows or outdoor spaces can give you beautiful getting-ready photos without rushing.
Some of My Favorite Beaches in the Area
One of the best parts about eloping here is how many incredible beaches you can choose from. Each one feels totally different, which makes it easy to design your day around your vibe.
Trinidad State Beach
Big dramatic coastline, rugged rock formations, and sweeping views from above. This area feels cinematic and powerful, especially around sunset.
Secret Beach
A quieter more tucked away spot that feels intimate and peaceful. Soft sand, cliffs, and that classic moody Oregon coast energy. One of my favorites for couples who want privacy.
Natural Bridges State Beach
If you are open to mixing locations or extending your experience, Natural Bridges offers beautiful rock arches and wide open shoreline with stunning light. It is a great option for couples who want dramatic coastal scenery with easy access.
These beaches pair beautifully with the redwoods and give your gallery so much variety.
Permits and Planning
Some beach locations do not require permits for small simple ceremonies, but Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park does require a special use permit for weddings and elopements. It is important to apply early, especially during peak season.
I help all my couples navigate permits, timelines, and location choices so nothing feels overwhelming.
This Area Deserves More Than One Day
This is not a place to rush through.
Brookings and Jedediah Smith are meant to be explored slowly. There is so much beauty packed into this area that trying to squeeze everything into a few hours often feels rushed. That is why I always encourage couples to consider turning their elopement into a two day experience.
Breaking things up allows you to actually enjoy each location, be present with each other, and create a fuller story through your photos.
Here is an example of what a relaxed two day elopement could look like:
