Why Utah Is the Best Place to Elope: National Parks, Hidden Gems, and Planning Tips
If you’re dreaming of an adventurous, wildly scenic elopement, there’s no place quite like Utah. This state is a true playground for nature lovers, with epic red rock formations, towering canyons, peaceful deserts, alpine lakes, and star-filled skies. Whether you want a sunrise ceremony on a cliffside or a private vow exchange beneath a sandstone arch, Utah offers a little bit of everything — and then some.
As a photographer who specializes in adventure elopements, I can confidently say: Utah is one of the most iconic and versatile elopement destinations in the U.S. Here's why.
The Mighty Five National Parks
Utah is home to five incredible national parks — often referred to as “The Mighty Five” — each with its own unique character and landscapes perfect for adventurous elopements.
Zion National Park
Zion is a breathtaking blend of towering sandstone cliffs, lush river valleys, and winding slot canyons. For couples looking for grandeur, it’s hard to beat. Popular elopement spots like Canyon Overlook, Angels Landing (for the brave!), and The Watchman Trail offer sweeping views that are especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.
Zion also features easier-access spots for more low-key ceremonies, such as the Temple of Sinawava or Court of the Patriarchs, which still deliver that iconic red rock magic. And since I’ve been visiting Zion my whole life (my grandparents’ ranch is just outside the park!), I know all the best hidden corners and off-the-beaten-path spots to make your day feel private and special.
Bryce Canyon National Park
Bryce Canyon feels like stepping onto another planet. Its landscape is filled with thousands of bright orange and pink hoodoos — tall, thin rock formations that create a surreal, almost fairytale-like setting.
It’s especially stunning in the early morning, when soft light hits the spires and casts long shadows across the amphitheater. For elopements, Sunrise Point and Inspiration Point are popular, but there are also tucked-away trails that give you more privacy and space. If you want to feel like you’re getting married inside a natural cathedral, Bryce is it.
Arches National Park
With over 2,000 sandstone arches, balanced rocks, and massive red rock fins, Arches National Park is the poster child of desert beauty. It's perfect for couples who want something bold, sculptural, and dramatic.
Delicate Arch is the most famous (and for good reason), but it requires a moderate hike and can get crowded — I always help my couples plan around the best times for light and fewer people.
Other favorites include Turret Arch, Sand Dune Arch, and The Windows Section, which are less trafficked and just as beautiful. This park shines at golden hour and offers epic stargazing options if you’re up for some night photography.

Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands is vast and raw — it feels more remote and untouched than some of the other parks, making it perfect for couples looking for solitude.
Island in the Sky offers panoramic views that go on for miles, while the Needles District features colorful rock spires and winding trails that give off major adventure vibes.
This park is also great for off-roading and backcountry elopements — if you’re down to get dusty and explore, the possibilities here are endless. You’ll feel like you’re the only two people in the world.
Capitol Reef National Park
Capitol Reef is often the most overlooked of the Mighty Five, which makes it an incredible choice for couples who want something beautiful and less crowded.
The landscape here includes towering cliffs, domes, natural bridges, and even historic orchards that bloom with fruit in the spring and summer. There are stunning overlooks for ceremonies, hikes to sandstone arches, and plenty of spots to set up a romantic picnic or stargaze after the sun sets.
It’s one of the most versatile parks in Utah — and one of my personal favorites for quiet, heartfelt elopements.
Incredibly Beautiful Spots Outside of the National Parks
While Utah’s national parks are iconic, some of the state’s most jaw-dropping and flexible elopement locations are actually outside of the parks — which often means fewer crowds, easier permits, and more freedom to explore. These spots offer the same dramatic red rock landscapes and wide-open views, with a bit more privacy and personalization.
Dead Horse Point State Park
Dead Horse Point is located just outside of Canyonlands and offers sweeping canyon views that rival any national park. The overlook here is one of the most dramatic in the state, especially at sunrise or sunset when the red cliffs light up in every shade of orange and pink.
It’s also much easier to elope here than in a national park — permitting is simpler, and there’s a designated wedding overlook that gives you panoramic views without having to hike far. This is the perfect spot for couples who want epic scenery without a strenuous adventure.
Goblin Valley State Park
Goblin Valley feels like a scene straight out of a sci-fi movie. The valley is filled with thousands of mushroom-shaped sandstone formations (called “goblins”) that create a whimsical, playful atmosphere. It’s an especially fun spot for couples who want to let loose, explore, and maybe even climb around a bit for their photos.
Because it’s a state park, it’s easier to permit, and the light here in the morning or evening is absolutely stunning as it filters between the goblins. If you’re looking for a quirky, off-the-beaten-path vibe for your elopement, this is a top pick.
Utah’s Slot Canyons
Utah is famous for its narrow, winding slot canyons that make for the most cinematic and intimate elopement photos. Canyons like Peek-a-Boo, Spooky Gulch, Little Wild Horse, and even parts of Buckskin Gulch offer stunning natural corridors of light and shadow.
These locations are perfect for couples who want a bit of adventure (some involve scrambling or tight turns) and photos that look absolutely unreal. The layered sandstone walls create textures and color that photograph beautifully, and since these canyons are often less trafficked, they feel private and secluded.
Moab & BLM Land
The public lands around Moab are an elopement photographer’s dream. BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land is often permit-free or much easier to work with than national parks, and it’s packed with epic red rock formations, natural arches, and stunning desert scenery.
This gives you so much flexibility — you can explore multiple locations in one day, set up a styled picnic or ceremony spot, and avoid the crowds entirely. Popular areas include Castle Valley, Fisher Towers, and Corona Arch, each with their own unique views and vibe. It’s also perfect for multi-day elopements if you want to spend one day adventuring and another relaxing or stargazing.
Bonneville Salt Flats
The Salt Flats are like nothing else in Utah — or anywhere, really. It's a vast, open expanse of white salt that reflects the sky, creating surreal and minimalist images. The landscape changes dramatically depending on the time of year: during the wet season, it mirrors the sky like a giant lake; during the dry season, it becomes a cracked, textured surface that stretches endlessly.
It’s ideal for fashion-forward couples or those who want something sleek and unique. Think editorial vibes meets raw desert. It’s also one of the best locations for night sky photos, with zero light pollution and wide-open skies.
Seasons in Utah: What to Expect
One of the best parts of eloping in Utah is that every season brings its own magic:
Spring (March–May): Mild temperatures, blooming desert wildflowers, and snow still dusting the high peaks. Ideal for couples who want color and comfort.
Summer (June–August): Long daylight hours, dramatic sunsets, and clear skies. It can get hot, especially in lower elevation parks, so sunrise/sunset ceremonies are best.
Fall (September–November): My personal favorite. Cooler temps, golden aspens in the mountains, and soft autumn light make for incredible photo opportunities.
Winter (December–February): Quiet, peaceful landscapes. Light snow dusting red rock = magic. Zion and Bryce especially look stunning in winter, and you’ll have fewer crowds.
Why Utah Elopements Just Hit Different
There’s a unique energy in the desert — something grounding and awe-inspiring. Eloping in Utah means you get to experience that stillness, the sense of scale, and the freedom to make the day entirely your own. Whether you're hiking to a viewpoint, camping under the stars, or simply exploring the park roads in your wedding attire, Utah gives you space to slow down and fully soak in the moment.
Plus, with so many accessible backdrops, it’s easy to plan a two-day elopement or a photo adventure with multiple epic locations. And yes, I help all my couples with custom timelines, permits, vendor recommendations, and the best lighting windows for each spot!
Scenery That Feels Straight Out of Another World
One of the reasons Utah is such a standout location for elopements is the incredible diversity and drama of the landscape. The scenery here is unlike anywhere else in the U.S. — or even the world. From fiery red rock canyons to towering sandstone cliffs and vast open deserts, it’s a natural wonderland made for jaw-dropping elopement backdrops.
Imagine exchanging vows with a panoramic view of sculpted cliffs behind you, walking hand-in-hand through narrow slot canyons carved by centuries of flash floods, or running across a ridge at golden hour with nothing but sky and stone all around you. Utah’s unique geography offers endless visual variety — and no two sessions ever feel the same.
Whether you're drawn to the vibrant layers of the red rocks, the surreal silence of the Salt Flats, or the intricate textures of hidden arches and canyons, Utah’s scenery gives your elopement a sense of adventure, scale, and storytelling that’s hard to match.
Don’t Forget the Stars: Add Night Photos to Your Utah Elopement
One of the most underrated (and unforgettable) parts of eloping in Utah? The night sky. With its wide-open landscapes and minimal light pollution, Utah offers some of the best stargazing in the country. Many of the national and state parks here are designated International Dark Sky Parks — which means once the sun sets, the sky absolutely comes alive.
If you’re up for it, I highly recommend adding on star photos to your elopement experience. Imagine wrapping up your adventure with cozy lantern-lit portraits, then standing beneath a canopy of stars for some truly magical shots. Whether it's a time-lapse of the Milky Way rising over the cliffs or a quiet moment captured under the moonlight, these images always feel timeless and awe-inspiring.
Best of all? It’s the perfect way to extend your celebration and create space for a more reflective, intimate moment — just the two of you and the universe above.
A Personal Connection to the Utah Desert
Utah isn’t just one of my favorite places to photograph elopements — it’s part of my story. I grew up visiting my grandparents’ ranch in Southern Utah, tucked between Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. I spent countless summers exploring the red rock cliffs, watching the stars come out over the desert, and falling in love with the raw, rugged beauty of this state.
Because of that lifelong connection, I know Utah incredibly well — not just the popular parks, but the secret overlooks, the quiet trails, and the local gems most visitors miss. That deep familiarity is something I bring to every couple I work with.
