Vivian & Jason: A San Francisco City Hall Elopement With Their Dog

Vivian and Jason wanted to get married at the iconic San Francisco City Hall, surrounded by a few of their closest family members. They wanted their day to feel small, simple, and intimate, something that belonged entirely to them. And most importantly, they wanted their dog right there beside them. Because dogs are family members too, and getting to include their sweet pup made the whole day that much more special.

There is something so special about a City Hall elopement. You get all the grandeur and history of one of the most beautiful buildings in the country, paired with the quiet intimacy of a day shared with only the people who matter most. It is exactly the kind of wedding I love to photograph.

An early, quiet morning at City Hall

We met at City Hall early in the morning, and the building was still calm and quiet, which is my favorite time to be there. Soft morning light poured through the tall windows and spilled down the grand staircase, and the crowds had not arrived yet. It gave Vivian and Jason room to breathe, to take it all in, and to feel completely present in their moment.

And their dog? The most well behaved guest of the entire day. Calm, happy, and clearly delighted to be right in the middle of all the love.

Can you bring your dog to San Francisco City Hall?

This is one of the most common questions I hear, so let me answer it clearly. San Francisco City Hall is a government building, and its policy allows service animals and emotional support animals inside. Regular pets are not permitted inside the building itself.

So how do couples still include their dog? The most popular option is to plan your pup into photos on the front steps and the plaza outside City Hall, where dogs are welcome. Many couples also bring along a trusted friend, family member, or dog handler who can care for their pup during the ceremony and then bring them out for photos right after. A little planning goes a long way, and it means your best friend still gets to be part of the day.

A simple, elegant ceremony

Once we had explored the building a little, Vivian and Jason had their ceremony. It was calm, elegant, and entirely them. No fuss and no rush, just two people promising each other everything, with their closest family looking on and their dog nearby.

And then, just like that, they were married. Simple, elegant, calm, and completely their own. And of course, their dog was right there through all of it.
